There are 7 marine turtle species and 6 are on the endangered or critically endangered species list. Their main threat is being caught in fishing equipment which means that they are not surviving long enough to reach maturity to breed. Rising sea levels and higher temperatures are affecting nesting grounds and ability to breed. Also there is an illegal trade in marine turtle meat, eggs and decorative shell products.
