A century ago there were 230,000 orang-utans in the wild but this has dropped to around 62,500 today. The biggest threat is the destruction of the rainforest, 80% has disappeared in the last 20 years alone and only 2% is legally protected. They are also killed illegally for meat and for the pet trade.
